Honor Thy Father And Thy Mother

By David J. Stewart | April 2011

Exodus 20:12, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”

The Holy Bible foretold of “PERILOUS TIMES” in the last days, in which children would disobey their parents. We are certainly living in those horrible times. If you don't remember your mother and father at least once a year, on Father's Day or Mother's Day, shame on you! I SAID SHAME ON YOU!!! 'Com on, just once a year? Is that too much to ask? If not for Mother's Day or Father's Day, how about just for Christmas? If your parents commit suicide at Christmas, I'll, bet you'd feel bad, if you never let them know that you were thinking about them; or perhaps you are just so selfish as a human being, that you really don't care about anyone except yourself anymore. I hope that is not true! Send a card once a year!

There is a heresy today that says children become adults at age 18, because that is when the heathen government recognizes them as adults. However, as long as you are living under your parent's roof, and they are feeding your face, providing housing, and caring for you—they have a say in your life! And I don't care if you are 50 years old, and your parent in 70 or 80, you should still honor (value) them! You don't sue your parents, like actor Richard Dreyfuss did his father and uncle. I'm sure it wasn't over money, but principle; still, you don't sue your parents! I love Richard Dreyfuss' acting by the way, he's the best! My favorite performance of his was in the 1977 classic film Close Encounters of The Third Kind. I was 10 years old in 1977, which was a magical time for many reasons. A lot of really great songs, movies and the Space Invaders console game came out in 1978! Teenagers today don't know how good we had it back then! I miss the simplicity and great times when I was 10 years old. I loved lighting off fireworks (firecrackers, Roman Candles, smoke bombs, snakes, skyrockets, M-80's, I had it all).

The Bible foretells of disobedient children in the end times...

2nd Timothy 3:1-5, “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

This refers to small bratty children, and adult bratty children. When I hear an adult child slandering their parent, causing grief for them, it is horrible and a sin! A parent is an authority figure in a child's life, ordained by God. Until a daughter gets married, her father is her authority. This is why a father gives away the bride on her wedding day. Nowadays, children are giving away their parents, literally, sending them to rot in a nursing or elderly home. I'd rather die than be abandoned in some cold nursing home to wither away in loneliness! The sins in 2nd Timothy 3:1-5 are all related—selfishness, disobedience to parents, high minded, pride, unholy, without natural affection, despisers of those that are good, fierce, false accusers, et cetera. Have you listened to the news lately? We are living in these horrible times of apostasy!

That term without natural affection refers to not caring about your own loved ones (your spouse, brother, sister, mother, father, children, et cetera). It is “natural” (normal) to love the people closest to us, but in these woeful times people lack such love. Wives are divorcing their husbands, saying that they don't love their husband anymore. In 1999, Singer Amy Grant told her husband Mark Chapman that he was the biggest mistake she eve made, and ran off with singer Vince Gill that very year before the ink was even dry on her divorce. And then the ungodly world celebrates Amy's and Vince's new marriage as the “ideal marriage.” Woe unto America!

Most of all, we ought to honor our heavenly Father as Christian believers. Divorce dishonors the Lord. Sin dishonors the Lord. I am a big sinner like anyone else, and I have paid for my sins, but many people don't. God assures us that no one ever gets away with anything. 1st Timothy 5:24-25, “Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after. Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.” The goodness of God leadeth to repentance. May we all honor our parents. My Mom went to Heaven in 2010, and my Dad in 2010. I'm next! But I still honor my parents through my ministry for the Lord, preaching the Gospel and feeding God's sheep.
