The Soul Winner
By David J. Stewart
“ And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” —Romans 10:15
God calls THE SOUL WINNER “beautiful.” I don't know about you, but that's enough reason for me to want to be a soulwinner right there. If it means that much to God, then we ought to go soul-winning on a regular basis, everywhere we go, to please God. THE SOUL WINNER is dear to God.
Soulwinning is not a method for churches today; rather, it is a command for all Christians to follow. Jesus commanded us to “Go ye” in Matthew 28:19-20 . . .
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
This passage of Scripture is commonly referred to as THE GREAT COMMISSION. Part of The Great Commission is for us to TEACH new converts to carry on the same teachings which Jesus taught in the Scriptures. This includes teaching new converts to become soulwinners and to teach their converts to become soulwinners and so forth. Jesus fully intended for the process to perpetuate.
THE SOUL WINNER continually sets their heart and mind on eternity . . .
“But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none; And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not; And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away. But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord” (1st Corinthians 7:29-32).
In other words, we should not place too much weight upon the events of this temporal life, which passeth away. THE SOUL WINNER needs to keep eternity in view at all time, redeeming the time, because our time here on earth is short.
THE SOUL WINNER abides in Christ. Jesus said in John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” The context here is that we cannot do anything without the presence of the Lord's Spirit, i.e., the Holy Spirit. America's churches are filled with religious workers who labor in their own strength, in vain, and souls are not saved through their efforts. The Salvation Army is a prime example of where apostasy leads an organization. The problem is that an organization cannot abide in Christ, individual believers must; but they have not, and so the Salvation Army is a corpse today, whose spiritual life is long departed and souls are no longer being saved.
THE SOUL WINNER walks with God, abiding in Christ, praying for God's Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of lost sinners . . . “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16). God's Word must abide in our heart, if we are to be used of God to win the lost to Christ. 1st Peter 1:23 tells us that it is the Word of God that is THE SEED by which lost sinners are BORN-AGAIN. There is much religious work being done today independent of the Word of God. It is utter apostasy and heathendom! There can be NO salvation apart from the SEED of God's Word. The very Gospel of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Scriptures by which we are saved.
THE SOUL WINNER hates sin, because sin is the cause of eternal punishment. Here is what the mighty man of God, Dr. Lee Roberson, had to say concerning eternal punishment . . .
“Somebody says, 'The thought of Hell is so horrible.' Well, my friend, so is cancer, so is tuberculosis, so is the grave. Someone said, 'I believe sin ought to be punished, but not for eternity.' That's your view, not God's.
Again another says, 'I don't believe in the wrath of God.' Then you don't believe your Bible. The Bible says the wrath of God abideth on the one who doesn't believe in Jesus Christ. He is lost forever.
Now, these things come to us out of the Word of God. The teaching of eternal punishment should give us a hatred for sin. We ought to hate sin. The reason we have changed so much in this day in all of our churches is that we are not hearing much on this subject. Therefore, we endorse sin. We engage in sin. We camouflage the sin in our lives and allow things to go by, instead of hating sin as God wants us to hate sin . . .
The teaching of eternal punishment should give us a passion for the souls of men.”

THE SOUL WINNER has a passion for lost souls. The Bible states in 2nd Corinthians 5:11, “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men . . .” Hebrews 10:31 warns, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Oh, that men would fear the Lord! The soul-conscious believer knows that “the Scripture cannot be broken” (John 10:35) and that God will make good on His Word to cast lost sinners into the Lake of Fire for all eternity.
THE SOUL WINNER has “an honest and good heart” toward God . . . “But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience” (Luke 8:15). Notice that soulwinning requires PATIENCE. Even if we abide in Christ, and His Word abides in us, the Bible still reminds us that we must be patient to see souls saved. We cannot save anybody, that is God's department. All God requires of us is to preach the Word.

“Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honored.” —Proverb 27:18
